Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are power generation technologies that convert sunlight into electricity. When sunlight shines, solar panels generate electricity. This energy can be used immediately or stored in an energy storage system (ESS) for later use.

PV systems directly convert sunlight (photons) into electrical energy using solar cells. Through the photovoltaic effect, light strikes a semiconductor, releasing electrons to generate electricity. This eco-friendly, renewable energy source is a key element of solar energy.

Solar photovoltaic systems produce no harmful air pollution, require no fuel, are quiet, and are easy to install and offer long-term operation.

A solar power generation system consists of a module composed of solar cells, a storage battery, and a power conversion device.

  • Solar Cell/Module
    A photovoltaic cell designed to convert solar energy into electrical energy. When light strikes the contact surface of a metal and a semiconductor, or the P-N junction of a semiconductor, electricity is generated through the photovoltaic effect.

  • Storage Battery : A device that stores generated electricity for use when needed.

  • Power Converter: A device that converts the direct current (DC) generated by solar cells into alternating current (AC).

Solar power has the advantage of being able to be installed on a relatively small scale compared to other energy sources, which means that power generation facilities are not limited to specific industrial facilities, but can be installed close to living spaces.

An Energy Storage System (ESS) is an energy storage device that stores generated energy and supplies it when needed.
 

It typically operates via a battery and an inverter. When charging, it receives external power (e.g., solar power). The inverter converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and stores it in the battery. When discharging, the stored DC electricity is converted back to AC and supplied as power.

Charging

During the charging phase, the energy storage system (ESS) receives electricity from the power grid or renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power and stores it in batteries, and the inverter plays a crucial role in converting the supplied alternating current (AC) electricity into direct current (DC) electricity that can be stored in the batteries.

Discharging

When the stored energy needs to be used, the system uses an inverter to convert direct current (DC) electricity to alternating current (AC) to discharge the battery, which is then supplied to the product to effectively meet the user's energy needs.

​In energy storage systems (ESS), stability is essential to ensuring a consistent and reliable power supply. When using renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, whose power generation is often intermittent, ESS helps stabilize power by mitigating these fluctuations, resulting in more stable and smooth power output and improved power quality.

  • Battery/energy storage cells
    These contain the chemicals that store the energy and allow it to be discharged when needed. 

  • Battery management system (BMS)
    Monitors and controls the performance of the battery cells. It monitors things like voltage, current and temperature of each cell. The BMS balances charging and protects from overcharging/over discharging.

  • Power conversion system (PCS)
    Converts the DC power from the battery into AC power that can be used by the application or fed into the grid. It includes inverters, converters and other electronics.

  • Thermal management system
    Maintains the battery temperature within an optimal operating range. It includes components like fans, pumps, heat exchangers, etc. to circulate coolant for heating/cooling the battery pack.

  • Housing/enclosure
    Provides physical support and protects the battery components. It is made of sturdy and non-reactive materials like steel. Provides environmental controls like temperature, fire detection.

  • Monitoring and control system
    Collects data from sensors and BMS and allows remote monitoring of the system’s performance and status. Controls charging/discharging operations.

  • Safety system
    Includes fuses, circuit breakers and other protective devices to prevent overcurrent, short circuits and fire hazards.

By storing excess energy generated during periods of high renewable energy production and releasing it when needed, ESS balances supply and demand, reducing fluctuations and strain on the grid.

This balance enhances grid stability and expands the integration of renewable energy resources, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

Furthermore, ESS can provide backup power during power outages, enhancing the resilience of individual households and the entire grid.

  • Self-consumption: Storing excess energy generated (mostly through solar panels) for later use in homes or businesses.

  • Renewable energy generation: Compensating for the intermittency of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, ensuring a stable energy supply.

  • Large-scale energy storage: Helps power companies store and distribute energy more efficiently, improving reliability and reducing costs.
